Dubai: The use of Twitter among world leaders continues to grow strong, and with more than 52 million followers, US President Donald Trump is the world’s most followed leader.  

A global study has revealed the top 10 most followed leaders on Twitter that also ranked people in terms of interactions with followers, in the form of likes and retweets.

According to the latest 2018 Twiplomacy study by Burson-Marsteller, President Trump became the most followed world leader in October 2017, passing Pope Francis (@Pontifex) who is the second most followed world leader with more than 47 million followers across his nine language accounts.

The official accounts of Pope Francis dispense daily thoughts and prayers in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the third-most followed world leader with 42 million followers on his personal account and 26 million followers on his institutional account, which is ranked at fourth place.

Among Arab leaders, Queen Rania of Jordan was at the top of the list with nearly 10.7 million followers, ahead of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Saudi Arabia's King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz is third with nearly seven million followers. 

The study also revealed King Salman as the most effective leader in the world on Twitter. “He has only tweeted 11 times between May 2017 and May 2018, but each of his tweets has received an average of 154,294 retweets,” read the report.

“He posts exclusively in Arabic and without any visuals, but every tweet is a digital home run.”
