Dubai: Want to get rid of your sofa set, bed or fridge? You might be wondering how you can most easily dispose bulky waste at home, which cannot be used by anyone else. Well, in Dubai, you can reach out to the municipality to request for their ‘bulky waste removal service’.

The service, provided by Dubai Municipality, allows residents to leave the bulky waste at their doorstep, or near their waste bins, after they have alerted the municipality of the request for collection.

How can you request for the bulky waste removal service?

The Bulky Waste removal service can be requested for by using Dubai Municipality’s smartphone application – ‘Dubai Municipality – DM Unified Mobile app’.

However, senior citizens and People of Determination can also call the municipality’s call centre number on 800 900 to make the request.

The call service is available for senior citizens and People of Determination. Since the launch of Dubai Government’s electronic transformation initiative, Dubai Municipality encourages all residents to put in requests through the Dubai Municipality’s unified mobile app, which includes all of Dubai Municipality’s services.

To use the app for the service, follow these steps:

1. Download the Dubai Municipality app, which is available for both Apple and Android devices.

2. Under services, request for ‘Bulky waste removal service’, which can be found under the ‘Waste Management’ tab.

3. Enter details of the old furniture or bulky item that you wish to dispose of.

4. Provide your address details, including Makani number.

5. If you would like to add pictures of the waste item, you can do that as well.

6. Click on ‘Proceed’.

The request is automatically diverted to the bulky waste service team, which schedules the pickup appointment with the customer.

According to Abdulmajeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department, this service supports the Dubai Municipality’s initiative to segregate waste and ensures 75 per cent of waste diversion from landfills.

“The call service is available for senior citizens and People of Determination. Since the launch of Dubai Government’s electronic transformation initiative, Dubai Municipality encourages all residents to put in requests through the Dubai Municipality’s unified mobile app, which includes all of Dubai Municipality’s services,” Saifaie said.

“To set high standards of waste management and to provide the best customer service, this service is available to all residents of Dubai, except development areas and free zones, free of charge, regardless of the quantity of waste,” he added.

All customers are expected and instructed to segregate waste, prior to the scheduled time of pick up.

Can people living in gated communities, which usually have their own waste management service, also call for this service?

According to Saifaie, at the moment this service covers various regions of the Emirate, except for real estate development areas and Free Zones such as The Palm, Discovery Gardens, etc.

What happens to the bulky waste items after they are collected?

All the bulky waste that is collected is taken to the municipality’s waste treatment site, where Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts to private recycling companies to segregate the bulky waste and ensure minimum waste enters the landfill.
