The day after the morning after for France, but there will be mourning for years to come after Zinedine Zidane's hot headed moment.
Why did he do it? It was the question on everyone's lips. The French maestro's moment of madness came in a fraction of a second, sending Zidane's image spiraling south.
Nevertheless, the feisty player received the prestigious Golden Ball award for being the World Cup's best player by journalists covering the matches.
French President, Jacques Chirac said of Zidane, "You are a virtuoso, a genius of world football, you are also a man of the heart, of commitment and of conviction. That is why France admires you and loves you."
Is Zidane a hero or villain? Did his headbutt taint his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time?
Thank you for your response. This topic is now closed. No more emails will be published on this page
Despite what happened, Zidane was a great player and he will be a legend forever. One accident due to temper in such a high velocity game cannot overshadow his entire contribution towards the game. So I think this matter should not be dragged any more and let's accept that Zidane will always be a legend.

Two things are missing from the discussion: Materazzi's provocation wasn't so unbearable, as Zidane took time to make a few steps, turn around and hit as quickly as he could. That is not "losing temper". Second thing: Zizou had already asked to be substituted. That means he was "done", and Italy had a good defence. Assuming that another ten minutes with Zidane would have given France the cup, doesn’t follow. And lastly, my Italy didn't do very well during the final match, indeed. Yet we got through. That doesn't mean France deserved to win, it means we were the best.

Materazzi insulted Zidane beyond limits, and yet the head butt he gave him was a really 'soft' one, not hard enough for someone to collapse. Was he pretending to be hurt? Trying to draw attention? Based on what Materazzi had said, serious steps should be taken against him for this act of racism. That was a very cowardly way to win the cup by getting rid of the best players in the team. As far as it is concerned, France is the winner! They deserved to win! They would have won had it not been for Zidane's expulsion. This obviously turned down the morale of the remaining French players. I think Zidane didn't react as badly as the situation demanded. Such cases usually end up with a broken jaw or missing teeth. Shouldn't Materazzi consider himself lucky that he's in one piece?

Zidane was in a violent rage, displayed in his inability to control his temper, sparked by his envy that I wore Materazzi's shirt, and not his.

Zinedine Zidane, of course is a hero. Soccer is one of the most famous sports ever. Zidane is one of the most artistic people who was also chosen as a better player than the best. His taste for treating the ball is not like any other player, he treats the ball in a special way to make it react right, all of this is to let you know that Zidane "The Art of Football", will not do anything evil unless it will harm him. I would call this as a self and dignity defence. Remember not everyone is perfect in everything.

It seems that in our modern world, it is very easy to use words that can be insulting, hurtful and disgraceful. The person who uses those does not take responsibility for doing so.
Let's look at it from the other side. Zidane is a great player, no doubts and on top of that, not less important, he has got an amazing and strong personality. That is what makes him "great", not only his magic passes and goals, but his inner side. But one should not forget that, first of all, he is a human being. A human being who has been so much praised and admired, some even called him "the god" or "blue angel". We all know Zidane, we all know how he plays and that he will never do such a thing unless his sentiments were really hurt. He would not stay there and insult him back, he reacted like a man should have.
There are values of all times that should not be played with such as mother, race, religion and honor. But if it is then you have to stand up for it, even if there is a price to pay afterwards. Materazzi for sure did his job, got Zidane sent off and scored. But one should not forget that there is more to life than soccer. Zidane will stay the same "Zizou" for France and his fans thorough the world. He is the one who brought France the World Cup in 1998 and the Euro 2000. He carried his team to the final with his superb performance against Spain and Brazil in this World Cup.
Maybe this time the pressure was just too much for the French Captain. In any case, he is not the one to blame. We can talk and judge, and even be disappointed or hurt. But nothing could be compared to what he is feeling now. His career should not be judged by an instant.

FIFA must form a high level judicial committee and investigate the matter of "what did Matterazi tell Zidane?" Justice must prevail and Matterazi must be stripped of all his medals and glory and suspended from playing football till at least the next world cup if found guilty. Zidane has already been punished for his madness.

This was a moment long awaited by the Italians, when Henry was called back, the only thing between them and the World Cup was Zidane. They had to get rid of him anyway. Everyone says Zidane did this but actually no one sees what Macro was doing by holding him up when Zidane did not have the ball in possession! Why was he holding him up and what were the exchange of words? It's clear that words were exchanged and I can assure you that they were bad enough to drive a maestro like Zidane crazy. In my opinion Zidane was a hero, is a hero and will always remain a hero.

The whole world was getting ready to give a memorable farewell to Zidane. But all of a sudden every thing was changed dramatically. Zidane will be cursing that crazy moment that cost them the World Cup more than any one else. One thing is sure, something serious provoked him for this behaviour. Materazzi was successful in his attempt to get him out, one way or another. But no one expected this from Zidane and this was not an exit he deserved. Anyway, the final match was a thrilling one for football fans and it was France who played well but the Italian defence didn't let them finish. So it was another term for Italians after 1982. The Golden Ball won by Zidane proves that a red card exit cannot belittle the great works done by a genius Footballer after Maradona.

Without any doubt, Zidane is hero! It was a human error of seconds. According to latest report from Zidane’s representative published on BBC, Marco Materazzi crossed the height of stupidity and that made Zidane to act in this way. This is an example that he has set for the future footballers that nobody should go beyond the limits otherwise one can get the result on spot. And let's wait for few days, everybody will come to know the actual thing. What Mr. President says is true and this small act can't change his decades of performance and reputation as a great footballer. And also, the result is announced! Zinedine Zidane is the best player of World Cup!!, what else!

I dreamt of a fairytale ending, and tied so much of my personal happiness to Zidane’s performance, that the uncontroversial red card had me so depressed. How? Why? What happened? Is it possible to rewind and undo it? Maybe not! No one ever gets that second chance. But Zidane did. Didn't he come back out of retirement and play the best game of his life for a second time? Oh totally! When I first saw Zizou play I though there was something magically intense about him as a player — the way he looked at the ball and the way he maneuvered it, so gracefully, like it was a feather, that could go anywhere, yet to strategically, like it was an atom bomb, and could not afford to miss. He set himself apart from the other 500 players in the tournament, won my heart, my respect and I waited with bated breadth to watch him win the world cup for a second time, and give his energized comeback a fitting ending. But he surprised me, just like he did in the game against Spain. Only this time I could identify with him, and he brought home a lesson that I had long needed to learn: Extraordinary talent can self-combust. To me this is his greatest contribution, showing the world honestly without manipulation the flip side of fire. The pleasure of watching Zidane evoked new life into me, and it will always eclipse the displeasure to watching him leave his prize behind. Zidane was real on that football field, he fought to play his game, and he fought to keep his integrity and for that, he will always have my respect and always be a fantastic role model. He has taught me what to do and what not to do! And I know of very few people who can be so honest about their humanness. Bravo Z!

The French played a good game. Much much better than Italians. The way Italians played for the second half looked so weird. It was not at all a play worthy of World Cup winners .When it comes to Zidane, he was playing so well with accurate crosses and his control on ball was so terrific. We can easily see that when Zidane goes to pass Materazzi, he was saying something to Zidane and I feel it would be a word which can provoke anybody. Zidane may have lost his control but it would have been wiser to say something back instead. Zidane is the best player indeed and I don't think this act will stop anyone from saying that Zidane is Simply The Best.

Come on guys let's face reality here. Many are sad because Zidane was sent off with a red card. It was a sad moment for France. But look at the scores. Italy, from preliminaries where able to beat opponents by acceptable margins. Now take a look at France. Italy deserves a win they really worked hard for the trophy. Viva Italy / Bravo France.

It's crystal clear that Italy doesn't deserve the World Cup. France is 10 times better than the Italian players. They proved it too. Italy hardly got the chance to possess the ball. There's no doubt that Materazzi had deliberately provoked Zidane to get him out of the match. The referee should have handed out Materazzi a red card for holding back Zidane. What was he trying to do anyway? Isn't that against the rules of the game?

The Italians did not deserve to win at all. France played a superb game. It was definitely France's game. They should have won the cup. Even with two of the best players out (Zidane & Henry), Italy could not score a goal and relied on penalties. Italy won by luck and they tried their hand at trickery and got away with it. Zidane is definitely a hero, his performance during this world cup was brilliant. As for his head-butt, his behaviour is acceptable and he will be remembered more for his performance. It is because of him that France reached the Finals. Hats off to Zidane. He deserved the player of the cup award. Way to go

Italy leave your drama to your mama. unfortunately this world cup was tainted with dives, drama and anything but good football. Both Italy and France are capable of playing wonderfully. Both are talented, but the pace of the game was set at the beginning with Italian players playing mind games instead of just the sport of football. Sad.

I would judge Zidane as a hero, a brave living legend who can respond as a human. He isn't a dummy. Zidane played harder than anybody else in the French team. We saw what the rest of the team did without him. I don't think Zidane did something that serious to get a red card since he didn't mean to really hurt physically. If he wanted to he could have, but he didn't even touch him with his hands. Materazzi's fall was a pure acting. The world will always remember Zidane as a hero. We can see and judge him better than the referee. We would prefer a blue card for him, to live long and to be remebered for ever for his effots and passion.

I support Zidane's move 100%. I was stunned at first when the incident happened, but it is ignorant to just look at it from one angle and say that he's guilty. If there was any form of racism, it should not be tolerated by anyone. The match ended with the penalty kicks which always sends one team crying. The Italian player who used racist words against Arabs should be legally prosecuted, irrespective of whether Zidane should have controlled himself or not. Such behavior is not accepted and the referee was unfair for not sending both players out with a red card. Another misery from the bad referees in this world cup.

Why didn't the referee find out the reason for Zidane's actions? Throughout Zidane's career he has been very polite - a nice secure player who hadn't misbehaved like this ever before. If someone blames him, they don’t know the facts. Why is only one person blamed? When he left it was the last ten minutes of game. You could ask why the other players played a poor game?

I agree with Karthik (Boston/Dubai), Italy did not deserve the world cup. The French team was far better then Italy. And even I think that Materazzi said something very nasty to Zidane. I think the world cup really belongs to the French. The referee seemingly knowing nothing, just gave a red card to Zidane. That's not right. Anyway I think you (Karthik Boston/Dubai ) and Shoaib (Dubai) are right. Zidane’s French team deserve the World Cup.

I am a big fan of Brazil who didn't put on a good show in this World Cup. France is a good team but as seen throughout this World Cup, were cheating. If you ask me who deserved the World Cup, I would say any team but not France. Italy played well and they deserved it. In the end they kept their nerves calm and came back through penalties. Zinedine Zidane is a good player but it was a shameful exit from the World Cup.

Italy did not deserve the cup. If only Zidane would have kept his temper, no one would have been as tense during the penalties and maybe the goal keeper would have stopped a goal or Zidane would have scored in the second half of extra time. I am a fan of Zidane and I really hoped Materazzi would have got a red card or at least a yellow card too. Oh I am so upset and sorry for Zidane. I really really wish France had won the cup

Italy played well, and I was very impressed by their previous performance against Germany. But against France, they did not deserve to win. Italy pushed the right buttons, and they got their victory using dirty tactics because they knew they were likely to lose. Lip-reading experts on ‘Fantastico’ (a programme on Brazilian television channel Globo) who studied footage of the incident, reported that Materazzi twice insulted Zidane's sister. This has yet to be confirmed or denied, but I very much doubt Zidane would have head-butted an Italian opponent for any light reason. Unfortunately Zidane responded inelegantly to Materazzi's provocation. If Materazzi had called my sister a prostitute though, I may have responded in a similar way. I bet for sure that Materazzi will not be remembered as highly in his last game. Materazzi is half the man that Zidane is, and he showed that to the world. My origins are Italian but I feel no glory whatsoever.

A world cup final to definitely remember - from Italy lifting the cup royally or Zidane's all so stunning headbutt. Both the teams were playing fantastic games and both had a 50-50 chance of winning. Buffon was great and so were Cannavaro, Matterazi and the others. Not forgetting Henry, Ribery and of course – Zizou. It was pretty sad for Zidane to end his last match in such a frenzy. I wish he could have remained calm and helped his team. Anyway, there’s a lot more in store in 2010 I guess. Well done Italia! The best team wins! But please – could someone tell me what did Matterazi tell Zidane?

Let me see, in 1994 Brazil won against Italy at the penalties and that was acceptable. Could anyone remind me about France and penalties in 1998? Also that was acceptable. Now we won them on penalties and that is not acceptable? How come? We played better in the first half. They attacked more on the second but then we became even on the supplements. Football involves skill, tactics and luck. We won by the rules, that's it. We won, we fought hard and we deserve it. Insults and insolence won't do any good to sport, it's a game after all, is it?

Both teams reached the final by luck. Italy didn't live up to the game they played with Germany. Maybe they were over confident of beating France after so much speculation about them winning the cup. But France started more like an underdog team. Both teams played fairly but France controlled more of the match. Italy won by luck but they did a good job in the penalty shootout - probably a lesson they learned from 1994 WC final against Brazil. Zidane should have been more professional in his last international game. He should have controlled his temper and I didn't expect such conduct from him. It's hard to say from his point what actually happened but that the reality, the red card. It could have been provoked by the Italian player verbally. Anything could have happened. We will see the WC goes to South America and than back to Europe and so on. Can some of the Asian and African teams live up to the challenge please.

Given the way Italy played throughout the World Cup they didn't deserve to win but that’s the way it goes sometimes. The slick SOBs employed every underhanded trick to ensure their passage to the next round but going to the extreme of picking a fight with one of the greatest footballers of all time? I wasn’t there so I cant say I overheard the verbal exchange but I have no doubt that the Italian had it coming. Disappointed with Zidane? Are you Kidding? I am a bigger fan now than I was before the incident. The replay of Zidane headbutting the Italian SOB and knocking the wind out of him without raising a finger: PRICELESS. Love you Zidane.

Italy doesn't deserve the world cup. The French were better then them. It was very clear that Materazzi said something very nasty and that Zidane lost his temper and went on to head-butt his opponent. The referee didn't even know about the incident. It was the Italian coach who brought in to picture to linesman and n then linesman told refree. Zidane, playing the last match of his career in Sunday's World Cup final, was dreaming of the ultimate farewell party but it went awfully wrong. It was very sad to see a player like Zidane walk past the trophy in tears. It was a horrible night for him and he will remember this night forever.

Zidane's behaviour was acceptable and he will still remain number one. He is better than Maradona and the over advertised Pele. Can we have a world cup in the Middle East. Maybe Dubai in 2014, Saudi Arabia or Teheran? I wished France had won the match. They played very well and I was expecting a lot from Zidane but didn't expect him to do what he did. He really let the french team down, He should have controlled his temper but still he should be given the player of the cup, he has played very well and deserves it. Italy has won but you cannot call this winning, they won by luck.

Italia won!!!! I can?t believe it after all these years, finally. Even though the French attacked more but the Italian stayed focused all the way through the 120 minutes and finally the penalties went the Italian way. They seriously deserved it. Luck was on the Italian side for once. I would like to say that Fabio Cannavaro deserves to be best player in the World Cup not Zidane. With that kind of attitude, you know a head butt won't get you the trophy.

I have been a good fan of Brazil all the time. They always played a superior football. But they failed to reveal their talents in the quarter final against France. And France really played well. The final was a great sport as both teams have showcased excellent football. Being a famous footballer, the way Zidane reacted was exceptionally wrong. If we consider the entire FIFA World Cup, Portugal would be the right team to wear the crown. They really deserved it for the effort and hard work they put in.

I believe there's nothing called worthy winners and unworthy winners in a game of football. It's a bundle of skillful play, defence, tactics, injury, refereeing and eventually the scoreline defines it all. If the score says Italy won the world cup then they truly deserve it. What a player does on the pitch is his contribution to his team. So if Zidane?s goal was a contribution to his team then so was his senseless behaviour.

Frankly I was looking forward to seeing Italy win. But then again, face it Italy, France is too good. Zidane is the best! Throughout, Italy was scampering around trying to take the ball from the French players. It was a shame that Zidane's last game ever should end like this. Petty! What a bad world cup. Italy definitely doesn't deserve it! They play in such a boring way. As for Zidane, well, I think he did the right thing by hitting that defender! This world cup was very enjoyable but sometimes I felt matches were fixed and rigged. The World Cup really worth remembering was the one in Mexico. The crowd were enjoying themselves, the team were in good spirit with aggression, penetrating power and beautiful coordination between teammates. This year's World Cup saw most of the teams disoriented with no aggression - as seen in earlier with Argentinean, Italy and Brazil. Overall a disappointing world cup not to the expectation of the viewers. You don't see quality football or discipline anymore. For Zidane to end his last world cup with Red card was very shameful. What an exit from the world cup. It won't be remembered for legends of Football like Platini.

Italy were no doubt the superior team amongst the 32 WC qualifiers. Their game improved at each level and that is the beauty of Azzuri's strategy. The Zizou chest header was the most shameful act ever to happen in the history of a WC final. This will bring disgrace to the game, if such un-professionalism is not punished. Cannavaro deserves the player of the Cup. Cheers Soccer, Cheers Happiness.

Zidane has been playing in Madrid for so long he's turning into a bull himself. Sorry for the sarcastic remark (he's really one of my most valued players) but I just don't understand why he would do such a thing. No matter what Materazzi had said or done to him, he was playing for France and he had a unique chance to walk out of his football career with the World Cup in his hand and become a national hero. It was the FINAL!!!!! I just don?t get it. He should know better. It?s also ironic that Trezeguet was the one who lost the penalty. The French coach (who doesn?t really like him one bit) would be thinking: "see?! THAT'S why I don?t let you play!!" But I really don't blame Trezeguet as much as Zidane. It?s a penalty, lose some, win some. Italy was not worthy of moving to the second round, really. They were playing very boring matches. But since that time, they have been delivering some great football. All teams had ups and downs in this tournament. Luckily for them, they saved their peak till the very end. Worthy or not, they got the World Cup and they certainly don't care.

I think that yes, Italy should have got the world cup. I really support them. Come on guys, they got the fourth cup after 10 years. Even if they fouled during the match with Australia, look at the other matches they played. They played well and the best part of all was their passing between player. That made them win. The other teams were just selfish to hit the goals by themselves. That?s not the way. I Zidane hadn't made that mistake he would have scored at the penalty at least. Anyway, I am really happy for Italy and yes they are worthy to win this World Cup!

Before one becomes a champion, one has to learn to lose and learn from their losses.? Portugal has a lot of talent and with their domestic soccer league flourishing, Portugal's future in the world stage looks very bright.? But that is quite the contrary for teams like England.? English media, fans and the players symbolize everything that is wrong with the game: Over the last decade the media has publicized average English players as world class.? The fans buy into it and start expecting championship titles from their average yet overpaid players. When they lose, the media then blames everything that is non-English - their coach, other team's players, the referee, etc. Instead focusing on improving the technical, physical and mental short-comings of players such as Wayne Rooney, the media and the fans resort promoting violence and finding excuses for their players technical, physical and mental short-comings. England is football what India is to cricket ? glorified winners in 'fiction,' ultimate losers in 'fact.'?

France's T. Henry jumped after he balanced. I wish the referee could see the replay of this match and not ruin matches with wrong decisions. Thanks to FIFA's decision to put a 2nd referee in the field for 2010 WC. If it was a draw match and they had to depend on penalty shots, it was a 200% Portugal win. Bartez (goalkeeper France) spilled the ball most of the time. Keep it up Portugal as you played a professional game. All the Best to French team after Zidane retires. There is no doubt to say that France will win the world cup 2006 with the golden legs of Zinedine. This will be a shining crown for France. He is the mature player in the field. Look at his face and watch the movements of legs. He never searches for the Ball but he is always looking at the goalpost. Whenever he looks at the goalpost, he passes the ball faster than his eyes movements. We only have a few hours left to see the world cup 2006 with France. Be ready for the universal happiness moments to be shared with France.

To all the Italian critics, well we showed you know huh? Once again the world cup is a marathon not a sprint race.? That is exactly what France and Italy did (with all the rubbish that was said about those two teams in the beginning). It?s about time people learned more about the game and realise that this is not a PEPSI commercial (yes I'm talking about Brazil fans). Italy is back, and Cannavaro is the man of the tournament without a doubt. Watch him in every match MAMA MIA what a player. Italy is the only team to have played 21 players (excluding the two extra goal keepers). That's the entire reserve team.? What a superb effort by Lippi, a true master mind. The players are not the best individually, but this is a team that is here to teach the world some football lessons. Forza Italia.? This is our year, this is our cup. Here's a hint to all of you novice football followers, replay the Italy game and notice when Lippi took out the only attacking force (TONI) and retained possession to frustrate Germany beyond the 90 minute mark. 1. He knows they played a tiring 120 minutes with Argentina, and will be exhausted if gone into extra time 2. Giving Germany a sense of false hope before the 90 minutes and then biting them in extra time was genius. The first two posts of extra time were proof and the two goals were more proof. Forza Italia, bye bye Germany

Yes! Italy are finally back in business. After numerous poor performances in their last few tournaments like 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, they have shown their real character. They have shown their trademark defensive performances lead by the inspiring captain, Fabio Cannavaro who I suppose will be another legend like the retired Paolo Maldini. Above all, Italy showed a great sportsmanship spirit as players were always back on their feet even when they were tackled aggresively. Surely, Italy is going to win their fourth World Cup.

I would love to say that Italy proved their critics wrong.? They are definately not mamas' boys. They deserved to win it more than the Germans after what happened back home: from the scandals to Pessoto's failed suicide attempt. Like any other Juventus fan I was devastated with what is happening and Pessoto is such a sweet guy. Winning the world cup would be lift for them. I watched the match and most of the time I was on my feet until Grosso's goal came. I was extremely happy when Del Piero scored the second. Forza Italia!

All the teams for the WC 2006 were up to optimum levels and everybody faced a hard time with each other. But Brazil played a very lenient and overconfident game with France. The first semi teams played well, but the German Coach was acting very insane from his stand - totally unprofessional for a teacher. His temper tantrums were not suiting his professionalism. It was a terrific match. Both Italy & Germany played very well and better than the Brazil - France Game last week. Italy dominated the entire match. They had the ball all the time. But Italy could not strike the ball at the right moment. At last the better team won.? My star player was Totty but all others played much better than him as Totty was being marked by the Germans. Fabio Cannavaro was marvelous. The World Cup will surely go to Portugal as they are the underdogs in the game today.? They are rough and agile. I think they can beat Italy in the Finals.

Brazil's players have been very selfish players. They don't play for their country, only for their record.

I believe this World Cup could have been even better had Pekerman taken correct substitution decisions. Seeing big names sitting on the Argentinian bench was more than unnerving for soccer fans. And in as far as English exit is concerned, I guess English midfield has to take that blame for they annoyingly missed many close chances. Moreover, FIFA must start thinking of keeping a fourth referee off-the-field, having access to instant TV replays, such that incorrect decisions could be escalated on the spot by on-pitch referees for second opinion for avoiding ruining good games.

Not only is Zidane the best player in the world for the last 10 years, but he demonstrates the talents of a true leader, shows a superior intelligence of football strategy and is repected and followed by a solid team. Despite a middle of the road coach - in such circumstances and with such personalities, his contribution can't be a maximum - the French system has proven efficient, due mainly to good physical preparation. And the team can do better: Henry can score more; Trezeguet was not employed enough; Ribery is a bomb making progresses; boys are not injured; and the French are now supporting their team ... with enthousiasm, I mean! If players minds stay at their current level, they will be hard to beat.

It's been so long since I've seen Zidane play such wonderful football. The French team certainly deserved to win last night. The Brazilians were playing really bad the last two games. An example: Ronaldinho - the guy who always gives perfect passes and assists and never misses a scoring opportunity - was really out of focus and was giving all kinds of wrong balls. Portugal vs. England was very thrilling and dramatic, especially that I was watching it with more than 300 Brits!!! Lot of disappointed faces! Rooney's behaviour was selfish and dumb (he was not doing much anyway). I?m glad for Portugal though because it?s one of the "it's-now-or-never" teams (like Holland and Spain) and they really are a good team. Hard luck England and Brazil!! Looking forward for great semi-final games (if only the Italians would start playing some football!). Italian fans, please, I've always loved Italy, but really, this year's team is the worst I've ever seen. Whenever Italy's playing, I really have to fight sleeping.

It is amazing that Toti and some of the other old time players are still playing on the Italian team, but I guess this is more due to lack of choice than anything else. The Italians played horribly last night against Australia. It is a shame that they won the way they did. It certainly wasn't worth a penalty shot - definitely an unfair call. I certainly know that was the last time I'll put my bet on Italy!

It was a poor and dismal show by the English team, considered a giant / founder of football, against the Caribbean flair and a newcomer to the World Cup, Trinidad and Tobago. HATS OFF to Trinidad and Tobago for a fantastic showing. With the likes of Beckam, Owen, Lappard and Rooney on the English team, Trinidad and Tobago kept them at bay.

It's a shame the English team did not manage to score a field goal.

I really don't think England can make it after what I saw yesterday. They are weak and couldn?t even defeat Sweden. Brazil is the team to focus on and are unanimously unbeatable.

England's backline and goalkeeping was very poor yesterday. They need to improve on these areas if they want to reach the finals.

I was really disappointed to see Saudi Arabia lose because they were really doing well. They had bad luck but they deserve to win.

June 17, 2006: Ghana 2-0 Czech Republic, USA 1-1 Italy, Portugal 2-0 Iran
It was one of the most watchable matches so far. It was spectacular to watch team ranked 50 defeat team ranked 2 nil on their debut World Cup. The game also saw first missed penalty in the World Cup. Though Czech were playing without their lead striker Koller. Let's?see if Ghana makes it to the next round.

I'm really appreciative of Ghana's 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic last night. As one of the African nationals who live in Dubai, I am so proud!

June 16, 2006: Argentina?6-0 Serbia & Montenegro,?Holland 2-1 Ivory Coast, ?Mexico 0-0 Angola
Argentina produced the best performance so far to soar into the second round. The two goals by Esteban Cambiasso and Hernan Crespo were brilliant. Even tournament favourites Brazil have to be cautious against their fellow South Americans after this scintillating performance.

June 13, 2006: Brazil 1-0 Croatia, France 0-0 Switzerland, South Korea 2-1 Togo
Brazil's game on Tuesday was delightful, but it was sad to see Ronaldo ambling around aimlessly on the ground. Why can't the legends of yesteryears, such as Ronaldo and Sachin Tendulkar, retire gracefully and make way for young talents?

The match between Brazil and Croatia was really very tight and tough. Both the teams played with equal power, especially when they took care of Ronaldo. Whenever he got the ball there were about three players there to tackle him. This means that Croatia came out to play Brazil with full power. Brazil, the defending champions, had tough time with them and could only retain 49% where as Croatia 51%. But it was a wonderful game with all the screams and electrifying audience. Brazil is one of my favorite teams. And I know that it will change its strategy game after game.

After watching Brazil narrowly beat Croatia, I am sure that Brazil will only go as far as the second round where they will be undone by Italy or the Czechs - both much stronger opponents than Croatia. France v Switzerland was a dull affair, I would rather see exciting teams like Denmark and Ireland but unfortunately both of those teams couldn't qualify this time. Spain opened their campaign with Ukraine, with a deadly striker like Shevkenko in their line up Ukrainians will be no push over and might surprise Spain tonight.

I think Brazil was a little disappointing. Croatia fired a shot, but straight into the hands of the goal keeper. Otherwise it would have been a nightmare for Brazil and their fans. Most of the big teams have been totally unimpressive. Only the Czech rep. has been impressive of the lot. Anyway, England will take the glory this time.

June 12, 2006: Australia 3-Japan 1, USA 0-Czech Republic 3, Italy 2-Ghana 0
I am so glad that the first round matches are so competitive. Even smaller nations are performing well, there hasn't been a one-sided match so far. The team to beat is, as always, Brazil. They lead the list of favorites but if you look at history, favorites never win! Argentina and France were favorites in 2002 tournament but they were eliminated in the very fist round. Brazil have a tough second round where they will either face Italy or Czech Republic. Both these teams have the fire power to match Brazil or even better them. I predict Italy will go all the way for a fourth title.

I'm very proud of Angola's performance. They stood strong against an idle Portuguese team that did not deserve to win. It's great to see small nations come out on the World Cup arena. I'll be even more glad to see them beat a few arrogant powerhouses.

There is no place more ignorant of World Cup football than eastern North Carolina, USA. After the Argentina win on Saturday over Ivory Coast, I locked the Argentine flag to my sunroof and drove to a BBQ party. It was great fun being so proud of my team in a place so far away from everything but knowing that I knew we won that game and it didn't really matter if no one else did. Joy, joy, joy.

I thought Iran played well, Mexico are a difficult team to play.

Iran played an excellent game, but they were unlucky to give away an easy goal which took the game away from them. I think they are highly capable of getting a point against the strong Portugese side and beating Angola. I think Holland along with Argentina and Italy are favorites to win the tournament. Watch out for the Czech Republic, they are ranked number two. That's no joke! They could go very far in this tournament.
