Emirati and Swiss jewellery brand Mouawad has, along with its role as the Educator sponsor for Abu Dhabi Art, 2021, has recently revealed a unique design in tandem with Dubai-based Emirati fine jewellery designer Salama Khalfan. The exquisite headpiece features a stunning range of embedded diamonds and emeralds.

The one-of-a-kind design was meticulously crafted by master craftsmen at Mouawad. The design is inspired by, and pays homage to, the date palm tree.

“It has been a great pleasure to collaborate with Salama Khalfan on creating an extraordinary object of beauty and adornment, knowing that we both share a passion for timeless sophistication and incredible gemstones. This collaboration is particularly meaningful, with the design paying tribute to the nature and culture of the Middle East,” commented fourth generation Mouawad Co-Guardians Fred, Alain and Pascal Mouawad.

The date palm holds special significance in the Middle East and it is widely considered a symbol of prosperity. In regional culture and life, every part of the tree nourishes and provides the residents. It also represents hospitality, thus underscoring the deep ties to region’s culture and tradition.

The diamonds in the headpiece are set in rivulets echoing a design inspired by the traditional weaving of dried date palm leaves. Palm leaf motifs are placed around the crown as a symbol of respect and pride for this cultural emblem.

Based in Dubai, jewellery designer Salama Khalfan established her brand in 2014. She melded her passion of art and jewellery by creating resplendent designs that capture timeless elegance with modern day usability. It’s hardly a surprise that several A-list Hollywood celebrities, including Meryl Streep and Emma Stone, have donned her creations in the past.
