Islamabad: The upcoming elections have seen the Pakistan Peoples Party give quite a few tickets to artists and actors, paving the way for them to become part of the national political discourse.

The PPP has now given a party ticket to female supporting actor, Gul-e-Rana, to contest to the provincial assembly from the PS 94 constituency in Lyari, private news channel reported. The party earlier accorded nominations to veteran actor and social activist, Sajid Hassan and Ayub Khoso, respectively.

Gul-e-Rana has kicked off her campaign with gusto despite it being her political debut although she is quite well known in the entertainment world having performed in many TV series.

Gul-e-Rana has been a member of the party’s cultural committee in Karachi.

Many of her fans and friends had advised her against joining politics, the actress said. “The country has given us respect, fame and wealth, now the time arrives to pay back what we have earned from our homeland,” she pledged.

Some sections of female voters are peeved and disgruntled and they are not wrong in airing their grievances, Gul-e-Rana said. The PPP was ready to heed the reservations and concerns of such voters and give them a patient hearing and the party encouraged its workers to take problems of such voters to the corridors of power when it had won a mandate, she said in an interview to a private news channel when asked about the female voters’ attitude while she was on the campaign trail.

She further said that artists were supposed to be ambassadors of peace. She insisted she is not a typical politician and hoped the people would give her a chance to serve them.

Gul-e-Rana said she is confident of fulfiling promises she is making to voters and supporters and contended she has no other intention to enter politics other than serving the people.

Gul-e-Rana identified the issue of water shortage and pledged to ensure the availability of clean drinking water at least for residents of Lyari.
