Fujairah: A huge egg with what seemed like ‘spells’ written on it was found on a beach in Fujairah, sending social media into a tizzy.
The egg-like object, with some kind of scribbling on it, was caught in the net of Emirati fisherman Salem Masoud Ali on Wednesday while he was fishing at Al Rugelat beach in Fujairah.
The fisherman reported the object to the Fujairah authorities and also contacted the Fujairah Department of Islamic Affairs, which sent a cleric to decipher the scribbling.
A person who witnessed the incident posted a video on social media showing the Emirati fisherman sitting by the side of the object and inspecting it. The video soon went viral.
Wildlife expert Dr Reza Khan assessed the video and said the object was an ostrich egg.
“It looks like an ostrich egg with some calligraphy done by someone [on the shell],” said Dr Khan, principal wildlife specialist with Dubai Safari.
Discarded egg?
“It must be from a private collection. Ostriches are native to Africa, but there are ostrich farms and many people here have them in private possession.”
He said an ostrich egg usually weighs over a kilogram.
“It’s the biggest egg [I have seen]. It could have been discarded by someone. [Or] perhaps an ostrich might have laid the egg somewhere [in the vicinity],” Dr Khan said.
As for the scribbling on the shell, Dr Khan said, “It’s better for people to ignore such things.”
