Expatriates applying for a job in the UAE must obtain a certificate of good conduct in order to be issued a work permit, the UAE government recently announced.
The new rule will take effect from February 4, 2018.
Refresher: What is a certificate of good conduct?
Because the UAE Government will start doing background checks of foreign workers from February 4, candidates applying for their first job in the UAE will have to produce certificates of good conduct.
How to get it
Expatriates who apply for work visa in the UAE must first obtain a certificate of good conduct — issued by either their home country or the country where they lived for the last five years.
The certificate must then be attested by UAE diplomatic missions, or oversees Customer Happiness Centres at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
How long is a certificate valid for?
The certificate is valid for three months.

You can go to any Police Station or the General Department of Criminal Investigation (CID) offices between 7.30am to 2.30pm from Sunday to Thursday.

How to apply from outside of the UAE?
If you reside in a different country, you must go to the police station there and get a fingerprint scanned and sent to the UAE Embassy of that country.

What if your Emirates ID isn't valid, because you are in between jobs?
The police explained over the phone that you need to show them the invalid Emirates ID or any valid ID, just to prove that you had one.
