Dubai: A holidaymaker, who got drunk, headbutted a sergeant and beat another when they tried to handcuff outside a hotel at Jumeirah Beach Residence, has been jailed for a year.

A Dubai police patrol was dispatched to the Jumeirah Beach Residence [JBR] area after an European tourist had been reported to be drunk outside a hotel in May.

As the patrol reached JBR, two police sergeants saw the 26-year-old British holidaymaker drunk.

When the sergeants tried to apprehended the drunk Briton, he headbutted one of them on his nose and punched the other on his head.

On Wednesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of consuming liquor and assaulting two police sergeants.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi said the accused, who failed to show up in court, will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

The defendant was sentenced in absentia and is entitled for a retrial.

Records said the victims were admitted to hospital for treatment.

The sergeant said they were reported about a drunk tourist at 3am at JBR.

“We went to JBR and saw the British accused, who was not in a normal condition. After obtaining his personal information, we handcuffed him, put him in the police car and drove him to the station. While taking him out of the patrol, he headbutted me on my nose and beat my co-worker on his head,” he said.

The Briton was cited as admitting to interrogators that he consumed liquor but did not remember what had happened because he was under the influence of alcohol.
