What is VoIP?

The acronym stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is basically a way of making telephone calls using the internet and has become especially popular with people who need to make long distance calls.

Over the internet. How does that work?

After you have installed the right software, simply call the number you want and speak as normal (either into your computer or via a headset or a special VoIP enabled phone) Your voice will be broken down into data, sent across as packets of information over the internet and then reassembled at a computer at the other end.

So it must be cheaper then?

Prices have yet to be announced, however it is likely that VoIP in the UAE will be cheaper than standard international calls. International operators such as Skype are often substantially cheaper than traditional telecoms companies when calling a landline. In some parts of the world, calls from one VoIP enabled computer to another are free of charge.

Any other benefits?

Yes. One of the reasons VoIP is so popular is that you can also make video calls. So not only do you get to talk to your loved ones, you can also see them. Something that could be a serious pull for people in the UAE.

So will I be able to use Skype in the UAE?

Not on its own. The licence to operate VoIP technology has been given to four UAE based companies, but the Telecoms Regulatory Authority says third party operators will be allowed to sign partnerships with the locally based firms.
