Dubai: Passengers travelling to Germany with Emirates are facing secondary checks at Dubai International following an agreement between the airline and Germany’s Federal Police, the Bundespolizei.

Emirates said on Tuesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bundespolizei that it said will “ensure a more efficient journey on flights to Germany.”

Under the agreement, passengers travelling with Emirates to Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Dusseldorf from Dubai are subject to “a secondary documentation screening check at the gate prior to boarding.”

Emirates said in an emailed statement the secondary checks, which have already been introduced, will cut the chances of passengers travelling without the correct documentation. They will also reduce the time passengers spend passing through immigration in Germany, the airline said.

The additional checks, which Emirates said “will enhance the effectiveness of travel documentation screening procedures,” are being conducted by specially trained Emirates staff familiar with Germany’s immigration procedures.

The agreement is the first of its kind between the Bundespolizei and an airline, Emirates said.

Passengers in Dubai travelling to the United Kingdom, United States and Canada with all airlines are also facing additional security checks prior to boarding.

The measures were introduced last year following blanket security warnings for Middle East flights by the US Department of Homeland Security and other foreign government departments.
