Medic killed on crash scene in Medina
A car fatally hit him as he was on duty handling the aftermath of vehicle flipping
Cairo: A medical was fatally hit by a car while he was on duty helping rescue the victims of another road crash in the Saudi holy city of Medina, media reported said Sunday.
The man was a member of a medical team from the Saudi Red Crescent who rushed at dawn Sunday to a road in Medina where a vehicle had earlier flipped over, the service's spokesman Khaled Al Sehli said.
"While they were dealing with the accident, a colleague was run over and transferred to hispital in a serious condition," Al Sehli added, according to online newspaper Sabq.
He later died in the hospital.
"The colleague was one of the most efficient medics who make great sacrifices to save others," Al Sehli said.
The official urged motorists to observe caution and vigilance on seeing warning lights at sites of road crashes.
Data from Friends of the Red Crescent Committee show that Saudi Arabia records about 526,000 accidents annually with up to 17 deaths daily.
Earlier this year, the kingdom launched an initiative for rendering the Saudi cities free of traffic accidents by 2025.
