Careless pet owners face fines up to SR50,000 in Saudi Arabia

Saudi authorities have warned that carelessness towards pets is punishable by a fine of up to 50,000 riyals. “Negligence of animals is represented by their owners’ lack of attention, malnutrition [of the pets[ or leaving them without adequate food or food or failing to give them enough rest,” the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said on its Twitter.

The ministry urged due attention to animals during a curfew currently in force in the country to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus

“Don’t forget them during the curfew. Make sure you provide food and water for animals when you are away," it said, addressing pet owners.

The ministry has announced a designated phone number to receive alerts on cruelty towards or negligence of animals.
