Philippines: Long weekend as Eid Al-Adha holiday marked on Monday
Law designates 10th day of Dhu Al-Hijjah as a national holiday
Manila: Filipinos will get a three-day weekend as June 17, 2024 is declared a national holiday in observance of Eid Al-Adha, also known as the "Feast of Sacrifice".
This marks one of the two major Islamic holidays celebrated as official non-working days in the Philippines.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed on June 4 Proclamation 579 honouring the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF).
This upholds the mandate set by Republic Act No. 9849, which designates the 10th day of Dhu Al-Hijjah (the 12th month of the Islamic calendar) as a national holiday for Eid al-Adha.
The Feast of Sacrifice commemorates Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command.
This national holiday coincides with Eid Al-Adha, just as Eid Al-Fitr, the other major Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, was declared a national holiday on April 10 of this year.
