Pakistan will be observing Eid Al Fitr on Sunday, May 24.

Mufti Muneeber Rehman, Chairman Moon-sighting Committee, made the announcement at 10.15pm (Pakistan local time).

It is a rare decision for Pakistan to observe Eid with Saudi Arabia and UAE. Normally, Pakistan observes Eid a day later. It means that this year Pakistan had a 29-day Ramadan unlike the 30-day month as marked in Gulf countries.

Rehman said that the decision to obseve Eid came after receiving moon-sighting reports from different parts of the country.

Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted soon after: "I want our nation to observe this Eid in a different manner from the usual celebratory style. First, let us think of & pray for all those families who have been deprived of their loved ones by the plane crash tragedy & all those who have lost their lives to COVID19."
