Dubai: As Dubai continues its rapid expansion, the Metro Blue Line represents a critical infrastructure investment to support future growth and mobility. This major project, featuring 14 strategically located stations, is currently under construction and will significantly reshape daily commutes by directly connecting high-density communities and business hubs including a vital link to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Slated for completion by 2029, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro system's launch, the Blue Line is a critical component of the emirate's vision for a future-ready transportation landscape. The line is split into two distinct routes: a primary route spanning 21 kilometers and a secondary, shorter route covering 9 kilometers.

This ambitious undertaking is projected to serve nearly one million residents and visitors. Furthermore, it is expected to provide substantial relief to road traffic, with RTA estimates pointing to a 20% decrease in overall traffic congestion upon its full launch.

The project has seen swift progress; after a groundbreaking ceremony in June, the RTA recently confirmed that the Blue Line is already 10% complete and is targeted to reach a 30% completion rate by the end of 2025.

Key destinations

The Blue Line’s route is strategically laid out to connect previously underserved, high-growth, and high-density communities directly to the existing metro lines and, critically, to the airport. The route includes several highly anticipated stops:

Strategic interchanges and terminals

The line will feature vital interchange points to integrate seamlessly with the existing Red and Green Lines:

Direct link to DXB

One of the most prominent features of the Blue Line is the direct connectivity it will offer between its served communities and the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai International Airport (DXB). Current estimates suggest a journey time of just 20 minutes from key areas along the route to the airport terminals. It remains to be seen if the Blue Line will utilise the existing Red Line stations at Terminals 1 and 3, or if a dedicated new station will be constructed.

Al Jaddaf (existing Creek Station)

This will mark the starting point of the longer route, facilitating a direct transfer between the new Blue Line and the existing Green Line. This vibrant waterfront neighbourhood offers picturesque views and easy access to the Dubai Creek.

Centrepoint (Al Rashidiya)

Serving as the starting terminal for the smaller route, this station is currently the final stop on the Red Line. Its connection with the Blue Line will significantly expand transport options for the Al Rashidiya community and retains its status as one of the few stations offering a free car park facility.

International City (Three stations):

The area will receive three new stations, including a crucial underground interchange station. This high-traffic commercial and residential hub, home to Dragon Mart, is set to become one of the most connected communities on the new line.

The iconic landmark stations

Emaar Properties station (Dubai Creek Harbour)

Set to be a global architectural marvel, this station will hold the distinction of being the world’s tallest metro station. Designed to manage up to 160,000 passengers, it will anchor the development at Dubai Creek Harbour. A significant engineering feat for the project is the 1,300-meter-long viaduct that will be built to carry the Metro across the waters of the Dubai Creek.

New access for growth areas

The Blue Line will bring mass transit to several communities essential to Dubai’s urban development plans:

Academic City

This station will serve the vast university town, which spans over 129 million square feet and is projected to host more than 50,000 students by 2029, catering to institutions like Heriot-Watt and Middlesex University.

Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO)

The station at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) is a cornerstone of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, significantly reinforcing its role as a premier hub for technology and innovation, crucial for attracting and retaining skilled global talent. This direct metro link is projected to dramatically improve local road efficiency by nearly halving commute times, for instance, reducing the journey from Bur Dubai to DSO from approximately 50 minutes to just 25 minutes.

Al Warqa

This residential area, home to approximately 60,000 residents and the Dubai Safari Park, will receive a much-needed direct transport link via the smaller Blue Line route.

Enhancing existing residential and commercial Hubs

Dubai Festival City

This busy location, home to a major mall and around 77,000 residents, will gain a direct link to the core of the city. The new route is expected to reduce reliance on the abra boat service currently used to connect to the Creek Station.

Mirdif

The larger route will link with this popular suburban community, providing direct transport to areas like the Mirdif City Centre mall and Al Mushrif Park.

Ras Al Khor

The Ras Al Khor station, situated between International City and Emaar Properties Station, will significantly enhance connectivity for the area. It provides residents and visitors especially nature enthusiasts heading to the adjacent wildlife sanctuary known for its flamingos with a direct public transit link to key destinations. This will ease traffic by drawing commuters away from private vehicles, contributing to the Blue Line's projected 20% overall reduction in corridor traffic congestion.
