Dubai: Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala is set to return to action right after Christmas as she confirmed her participation in the 2025 Macau Tennis Masters, scheduled for December 27—28.
The 20-year-old Eala was announced as one of the featured players in the two-day invitational event, which will also include rising star Mirra Andreeva of Russia and tennis legends Li Na of China and Conchita Martinez of Spain — both Grand Slam champions.
“I’m so excited to be part of the MGM Macau Tennis Masters this December,” said Eala in a promotional video released by the organisers.
Joining them in the competition are ATP players Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic, Shang Juncheng of China, and Jack Draper of Great Britain.
“Game on. The 2025 MGM Macau Tennis Masters is officially in play,” the tournament announced on social media. “This year, we’re bringing the energy of Play. Celebrate. Repeat. — and shining the spotlight on Women’s Power,” it added.
Before heading to Macau, the 5-foot-9 Filipina is expected to represent the country in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, taking place from December 9 to 20.
If all goes according to plan, it could mark a triumphant comeback for Eala, who previously earned three bronze medals in the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games.
Just weeks ago, Eala achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 50, a remarkable rise from her No. 158 position earlier this year, following a strong showing at the Hong Kong Tennis Open, where she reached the second round before bowing to eventual champion Victoria Mboko of Canada, 3—6, 6—3, 6—4.
Capping off her season, Eala made history for Philippine tennis by capturing her first WTA 125 title at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico. The milestone victory highlighted an already impressive year, which also saw her competing in top-tier tournaments such as the WTA 1000 Miami Open and the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open.
