Manama: A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to one year in jail and 600 lashes for insulting his mother.
The man, in his 30s, was apprehended by the police after patrols received a call for assistance from his mother, in her 50s.
The mother told the police that her son abused her verbally by calling her names and assaulted her, and hurled a bottle of juice at her, causing wounds to her neck. The son also threatened to kill his mother, local daily Al Watan reported on Sunday.
Following an investigation, the police discovered that the defendant had been accused in a case related to the possession of drugs.
A court summoned the son who reportedly admitted his misbehavior and disobedience, and pledged not to repeat them.
However, the judge refused to acquit him and issued the jail sentence and the lashes punishment.
Online users expressed shock over the son’s actions towards his mother and said that he should be handed a heavier jail sentence for showing disrespect and contempt.
“Islam teaches people to show the highest levels of respect for parents and to display utter gratitude, and here we have a man who assaults his mother, insults her verbally and harms her physically as well,” a blogger, writing under the moniker Obedient, said. “I wish my mother were alive to devote my very being to making her the happiest person.”
