Manama: Kuwait's health ministry has investigated 61 cases alleging medical errors in the first nine months of this year, the health minister has said.

The ministry dealt with 68 such cases in 2009 and 49 in 2008, according to Helal Al Sayer who was answering parliamentary questions from MP Salem Al Namlan on allegations of medical negligence at public and private health facilities.

In his answer, the minister explained that there was always a risk of medical errors, for instance related to complications arising from surgical procedures, Kuwait Times reported on Sunday.

Al Sayer said that the ministry rejected several of the claims put forward after investigations found no grounds for a ruling of medical negligence.

However, the minister said that all those who were found guilty of medical negligence have been "subjected to extensive investigations that are continuing."
