Dubai: The Kuwaiti Interior Ministry has referred Ahmed Al Jarallah, Editor-in-Chief of Al Seyassah newspaper, to the public prosecution for investigation on charges of insulting the Shiite sect.

According to local media, Al Jarallah, who is known as the “Dean of Kuwaiti Press”, on Thursday was referred to the prosecution for sparking sectarian strife and insulting Shiite citizens. The famous journalist has yet to comment on the issue.

No more details disclosed by the ministry about the charges.

However, social media users have reacted to the news saying that the reason behind referring Al Jarallah is due to posting a tweet and sharing a picture insulting Shiite symbols.

The tweet and the image were not found. Social media users said Al Jarallah has deleted the tweet and the picture following the discontent it caused among activist and MPs, who demanded legal action be taken against him.”

Activists and Shiite MPs said: “The Minister of Interior should refer Al Jarallah to the Public Prosecution for using offensive content that violates the National Unity Law and Cybercrime Law.”

They added: “Al Jarallah has blasphemed Shiite scholars and sect, and hence the Ministry of Interior should deal with all those who violate the law and do not condone such intended abuses, even if Al Jarallah deleted his abusive tweet.”

Ahmed Al Jarallah is a Kuwaiti journalist, author, and the editor-in-chief of the Kuwaiti newspapers Arab Times and Al Seyassah and owner of the weekly magazine Al-Hadaf. Jarallah is known for his criticism of Islamic extremists.
