Theresa May:

1. May attended numerous comprehensive and grammar schools in Oxfordshire, before joining University of Oxford in 1974 to study Geography. Her first jobs were at the Bank of England and and the Association for Payment Clearing Services.

2. She is the second longest-serving home secretary in the past 100 years. James Chuter Ede held the position between 1945 and 1951, May was only a month away from breaking his record.

3. May was caught up in a controversy for appearing in a pair of leather pants in a magazine. The British media dubbed the incident “Trousergate.”

4. She met Philip May, her husband, through Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, during a Tory student dance.

5. As a chair of the Tories in 2002, May said that their policies led people to call them “the nasty party.”

6. Photographers like to capture May’s shoes, as she is known for her interesting choice of footwear.

7. May actively advocates for women’s rights. She used to be the president of Women2Win campaign to encourage more women to run for Tory parliamentary candidacy. As well as advocating equal pay and shared parental leave.

8. Despite being a regular church-goer, she said that she will not let religion interfere with politics.

9. May is aware of other cultures, and last year she quoted few lines from the Quran during a conference speech in 2014 refuting the ideology of Daesh.

10. During the referendum on leaving the EU, she was for ‘remain.’ However, since the country voted to ‘leave,’ she is promising to secure a solid Brexit deal.

Jeremy Corbyn

1. Corbyn became a vegetarian at 20, after working for a while at a pig farm. He also rarely drinks liquor.

2. He had the lowest claim during the expenses scandal at the House of the Commons, which was a £8.95 for a printer cartridge.

3. Corbyn is a supporter of Palestine, and has said Israeli colonies are “illegal” on several occasions. He is also a patron of the “Palestine Solidarity Campaign,” an organisation in UK dedicated to fighting for Palestinian human rights.

4. He had a middle-class upbringing, lived in a seven bedroom house, attended a grammar school, and went by the nickname “Jelly” as a child.

5. The Labour leader is described as frugal. In fact, he does not own a car, and instead rides a bicycle.

6. His mother, Naomi, worked as a math teacher, while his father, David, was an electrical engineer. They were peace campaigners and met in a London rally against the Francisco Franco’s fascists in Spain.

7. Corbyn enjoys gardening and spends as much time as possible in his allotment. He likes to grow his own fruits and uses them to make homemade jam for family and friends.

8. He supports Arsenal Football Club, and is a fan of their manager, Arsene Wenger. In 2004, he described Arsenal as the best football team in the world.

9. Corbyn is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cheese. The group focuses on economic issues faced by the dairy industry and produces, and aims to increase awareness of their concerns.

10. Despite some critics calling his beard ‘unkempt,’ he has won the ‘Parliamentary Beard of the Year’ award five times.
