Karachi: Police arrested three private guards of former Balochistan chief minister Nawab Akhtar Mengal for torturing three personnel belonging to an intelligence agency after besieging his house in Karachi for more than 14 hours.

The police also registered a case against Mengal on similar charges, which included hampering official work, but did not arrest him.

The stand-off between Mengal and the security personnel, who surrounded his residence in the posh Defence Housing Authority neighbourhood on Wednesday morning, ended past midnight after intense negotiations between the two sides, police sources said.

Mengal, who leads the opposition Balochistan National party (BNP), was persuaded to hand over his three guards and their weapons to the police, they said.

Mengal's guards held and beat two Military Intelligence officials on Wednesday for shadowing his two daughters aged seven and 11 in Karachi.

"The surveillance of my children, who also received kidnapping threats, is nothing but victimisation of political opponents," Mengal told Gulf News.

Nawab Attaullah Mengal, Akhtar's father and a veteran politician, slammed the government for what he called discrimination and victimisation of the Baloch politicians.

"When we contacted the Sindh Home Minister he expressed ignorance about the siege at Akhtar's House," he claimed.

The government dubs Mengal as one of three tribal chiefs creating trouble.
