Karachi: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is investigating allegations that five of its officers harassed a female medical officer at the national flag carrier.
The charges, if proven, could cost the accused their jobs.
A PIA official said a committee of two senior officers has been formed, including a female as required by the law.
Local media reported that retired colonel Akhtar, who was working as general manager and Amna, the deputy general manager were conducting the enquiry into the charges.
Taking notice of the complaint, the managing director of the PIA transferred two of the accused and instantly formed the committee.
“The committee would submit its report within a couple of days and further action would be taken accordingly to the outcome of the report,” Mashhud Tajwar, the spokesman to PIA told Gulf News.
The medical officer reported that she was sexually harassed by five officers and employees at a hotel.
She said the attack took place a few months ago but, for reasons better known to her, she registered the complaint recently.
Tajwar said no police complaint was registered so far but the matter would be referred to the police if the allegations were proven to be true.
Internal action would be taken against the culprits, he said.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered all the public sector departments to create cells or committees to look into cases of sexual harassment in the workplace.
Tajwar said that PIA had long back created Women Protection Committee to curb the social menace at the work place.
Pakistan recently enacted a law in a bid to protect employed women from sexual harassment. Passed in 2010, the law defines harassment as any unwelcome sexual advance, request for sexual favours, or other verbal or written communication, or physical conduct of sexual nature or sexually demeaning attitude.
