New Delhi: Gurgaon is to be the home of an autonomous defence university — at last.
The government made the decision yesterday to approve "in principle" the recommendation, which had been made by ministers nearly a decade ago.
The defence university would be to help craft strategic planning and analyses, in line with the country's geopolitical objectives and national security.
"The union cabinet accorded, in principle, [the] approval for [the] setting up of the Indian National Defence University (INDU) as a fully autonomous institution to be constituted under an act of parliament," an official statement said.
The decision to create the univeristy was taken at a cabinet committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The cabinet also approved the acquisition of 200 acres of land in Gurgaon, for the site.
"[The] INDU will undertake long-term defence and strategic studies and create synergy between [the] academic community and government," the statement said.
