Thiruvananthapuram: An investigation into a theft at the home of an actress in Kerala has revealed a movie-script-like tale — the culprit is believed to be none other than the fiance of the actress’s sister.

Police have apprehended the would-be-groom, Shebin, 32, and an accomplice, Karupatty Saji, 45. Two more accused, Rajan and Saju are at large.

The details were revealed following a complaint by the actress’s father, Salahuddin, that about Rs500,000 (Dh30,757) was stolen from the Thiruvananthapuram home of Iniya, an actress who has played roles in Tamil and Malayalam movies.

The incident took place on June 5, when the actress’s family members had gone to watch a movie with Shebin.

Shebin was engaged to marry the actress’s sister, Swathi.

Police had a hunch from the start that it was someone connected to the family that had committed the theft because the front door of the home was intact while a bedroom had been broken into.

When they began questioning relatives, their suspicions pointed to Shebin as well.

On the day of the crime, Shebin had accompanied the family for the movie. Police believe that he had already made a duplicate key to the house and handed it over to his friends to enter the actor’s house while they were in the cinema.

Shebin’s friends are accused of having stolen money from the actress’s home, and shared the proceeds with Shebin. Police also believe that Shebin had schemed a similar plan on the day of his engagement on May 29, but it could not be carried out because of the number of people at the house.

In another case, a woman who cheated several men and tricking them into marriages before making away with their money, was revealed to have worn fake jewellery at her weddings.

Shalini, who was arrested in Palani in Tamil Nadu after disappearing with the jewellery and money of Sasindran Nair, the man she last married, is believed to have convinced the men she married that she was a lawyer.

When police took her to the home of one of the men she married, Ratish Kumar from Kavalam in Kuttanad, as part of the inquiry, it was revealed that the jewels she had left at Kumar’s home were fake. Police are still trying to locate those who are believed to have helped Shalini in her act.
