Dubai: Emarat Times was officially launched this week as the first Arabic e-newspaper in the Arabian Gulf.

The paper will be going solely for web-based distribution without having a print version.

According to Managing Editor Salman Al Shashaa, Emarat Times is aimed at overseas Arab readers, "The Arabic press has long been trailing the rest of the world when it comes to technology.

"The future of media is in the digital format. News happens now; nobody wants to read about what happened two days ago.

"Emarat Times will address issues within the UAE that are of interest to Arab readers around the world."

Dar Al Sada Publishing, a Dubai-based publishing house and the paper's parent company, launched the site www.emarattimes.com on June 1.
