The ban on the Islamic burkini swimsuit on some French beaches has triggered disdain on social media channels.

A village mayor in Corsica banned full-body swimsuits known as “burkinis” after a beach brawl between families of North African descent and local youths.

Sisco Mayor Ange-Pierre Vivoni was adamant his decision was “nothing to do with racism, it’s about protecting people’s security”. According to AFP Vivoni said: “I am absolutely not racist. I want to protect the population, notably my area’s Muslim population because I think that they are the main victims of these extremist provocations.”

Here are some comments from social media:

@PropitiousOn3: “Aheda Zanetti, the creator of Burkini says that skin cancer survivors buy my burkinis. #BurkiniBan.”

@LauraAgustin: “#Burquini inventor: ‘They are using a piece of fabric as a political item. Little do they know a lot of non-Muslims are wearing it’.”

@joycetreasure: “#Burquini ban is hypocritical to the max. Women have a right to wear whatever they wish.”

@mamaduck9370: “I’m non-Muslim but have considered buying a burquini because I have lipoedema & I want to cover my legs. Ban is ludicrous.”

Mariangela Veronesi: “I’m shocked about the ban on full-coverage outfits to go swimming in France - how can telling a women she can’t wear something be in favour of women’s freedom? That makes no sense - that’s clearly a form of oppression to tell a women she cannot wear what she wants! First we have to fight for the right to show our bodies, and now we have to fight for the right to not show them if we choose not to? I am very upset about the idea that the law is telling women to show some skin - let the ladies do whatever they want. full stop.”

Adina Ta’Shay-Marie Pittman: “I just think it’s funny because you all want to call girls all kinds of names when we show skin and have the dumbest dress code rules, but then when we actually choose to cover ourselves its a problem?”

Victoria Putzbach: “You’re xenophobia is showing. Shut up and leave people alone.”

Que Bee: “You tell her she has the freedom to wear what she wants, then you fine her when she doesn’t choose to expose her body? It is called choice.”

Kristen Schettino Carino: “What kind of world do we live in when we are condemned as women for wearing more clothes on the beach?”

Sam Walsh: “It’s a cute wetsuit, and all you’re doing is isolating these ladies even more by outlawing their clothes. Reminds me of having clothes banned in schools for girls. This is similar and not cool.”

Victoria Garcia-Amador: “We bash on women who wear little to no clothes. We bash women for covering themselves from head to toe. Just let these women live their lives. They want to cover up? Let them cover up. There is no harm in people wanting to dress this way if it makes them feel comfortable.”

Jawaid Rasheed Siddiqui: “France’s ban on Burqini is just like Iran’s ban on Bikini: A patriarchal mindset that believes women can’t decide for themselves.”

Aida Linn Villegas: “I would wear this! Be able to go tho the beach and not get burnt!”
