Drivers showing a lack of etiquette on the UAE's roads are a dime a dozen. However, those who violate the rights of people with special needs by taking up parking spaces designed for them should feel the full force of the law.

Parking spots for drivers with special needs are intended to make their lives easier and zero tolerance should be shown to those who take advantage of this facility and park illegally.

Fines should be made even stiffer for those who not only take the spots but also forge documents and permits that entitle them to use these spaces. Additionally, an awareness campaign launched by the Dubai Police titled ‘Stand by Them and Not in their Way' seeks to make the public more sensitive to the needs of drivers with special needs.

The number of offenders has been rising and the campaign should reflect the magnitude of the issue. It doesn't cost much to empathise.
