The pointless horror of terror attacks was made shockingly clear by this week’s suicide attack on the Indian consulate in Jalalabad. As it turned out, the assault would have been much more destructive if it was not for the effective action taken by Afghan policemen in foiling the plans of the three carloads of terrorists. Thanks to their prompt action, the would-be attackers were unable to complete their mission, but 12 people were killed when they detonated the explosives they were carrying close to a mosque where children were attending religion classes.

Eight children and 12 adults were killed, including three attackers as well as some of the defending Afghan security forces. All the Indians in the consulate were safe, and the Indian Foreign Office praised the actions of the “valiant Afghan police personnel”.

No organisation has yet claimed responsibility for this shocking attack, and even the pro-Pakistan Afghan Taliban said the group “did not have any operation planned.” However, the Indian Foreign Office has pointed out that the attack has “once again highlighted that the main threat to Afghanistan’s security and stability stems from terrorism and the terror machine that continues to operate from beyond its borders”.

The actions of deluded people who are prepared to kill innocent civilians and children in pursuit of their political aims are wrong. The criminals behind these pointless murders should face the full force of the law.
