Dubai: Every year around this time, Thailand erupts into watery mayhem to mark the country’s New Year, known as Songkran. Armed with squirt guns and buckets of icy water, tens and thousands of people roam the streets to douse anyone they can find.
However, if getting soaked isn’t your thing, we suggest you head down to the Sukhothai restaurant at Le Méridien Dubai hotel and Conference Centre in Garhoud, which has been transformed into a Thai wonderland for Songkran. Traditional lanterns and water-themed features greet you as you step into the wood panelled restaurant where chef Supachai has created a special menu with traditional Thai dishes packaged into an All You can Eat and Drink offering.
From starters like Gai Hor Bai Toei (marinated chicken wrapped in pandan leaves) to the intensely flavoured Phanaeng Gai Rue Nuea (creamy red curry with chicken), in the main course down to the desserts, it’s a culinary journey you’d find hard to forget. But hurry, the New Year Menu is available only until April 18. Lunch: Dh149; Dinner including house beverages: Dh199 Call: 04 702 2455
