Supta Vajrasana, which means reclining thunderbolt pose in Sanskrit, is one of the few yoga postures that can be practised after eating. It is very beneficial, as it stimulates digestion and stretches the colon.

Besides benefiting the digestive system, this asana provides a deep stretch to the hip flexors and quadriceps muscles. This pose can be very relaxing when practised regularly but it is particularly recommended during times of travel and for digestive problems.

Supta Vajrasana

  • Sit in Vajrasana (kneeling position).
  • While inhaling, slowly lean backwards, until you are resting on forearms. Let your head hang back.
  • While exhaling, slowly lower yourself to the floor, until you are lying flat. Stretch arms above head, keep palms facing upwards.
  • Stay in the final posture for up to 60 seconds. Maintain normal breathing in the final position.

Note: Always come out of the final position by coming back to Vajrasana first. Never leave the final position by straightening the legs.

Benefits

  • This asana relieves constipation.
  • It helps correct bad posture of the spine.
  • It protects the knees from injuries by strengthening the muscles that support them.
  • It provides a good stretch to the abdominal muscles.

Caution

This pose should not be practised by people suffering from neck problems, sciatica, slipped disc, sacral ailments or knee problems.
