Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell started their modelling career when they were 17, but kids in Dubai don't have to wait that long.
With a former blonde model teaching them how to pose for the camera during lessons on poise and posture and advising them on make-up and styling techniques, many children – some as young as seven – have mastered the art of sashaying on the ramp.
Zelda du Toit, a finalist at the 1999 Miss South Africa beauty pageant, has been putting these kids through their paces to help them acquire the grace and skills of a seasoned model. And now they are ready for their first performance: an in house graduation fashion show at the Hayya Health Club in Meadows tomorrow evening.
"The idea is to instil in them a sense of confidence and develop their overall personality," says Zelda, who runs modelling and grooming programmes specially designed for kids from 7 to 18.
At Dh650 for 10, one-hour sessions, the kids learn how to look and feel good in a fun and informative way.
Besides lessons on exercise and figure control, body, hair and skin care, the children are also given tips on memorising scripts and auditioning for TV commercials.
A special session on photo posing and freeze modelling teaches kids how to portray different moods for the camera. A record of all students is kept for future reference to select casting and modelling agencies.
But Zelda's programmes aren't just about modelling. She also teaches children how to be a gracious host.
"With fewer of us sitting down to family meals, there's apparently been a significant effect on table manners of our kids. This is why it's so important for them to learn how to set up a table and interact with their guests."
Just over one year into running and Zelda's programme has become a roaring hit in Dubai.
"My daughters, Krupa and Nikita, have benefited immensely from the course. I know they will utilise the experience in their lives and pass it down to their own families," says Priti Vyas.
Similar views are expressed by Helen Bruce whose daughters Annlise and Emily also enrolled for the programme.

I liked the article on Zelda du Toit. She is doing an excellent job by grooming the future models. I would also like to have her contact details as I want to enrol my daughter for the same course.

The article on Zelda du Toit is very good. I am pleased to know that ladies who have achieved goals in their life are also giving back to the younger generation. It is good to know that Dubai is attracting so much talent and giving these people an opportunity to showcase their talents and give back what they have learned to new people. I would also like to enrol my daughter with her.
