It's a party season staple - especially if you're under the age of 10 - but velvet and its funkier fashion cousin, velour, are well and truly back on the style radar for grown-ups. Not since Tom Ford sent a velvet tuxedo down the runway has velvet been more in vogue, and the modern interpretation of this classic fabric is one of this season's sartorial stars.

A focal point of the collections of everyone from Etro to Valentino, the fabric's icky glam-rock heritage has been cast aside, allowing for velvet to be back on the wardrobe wishlist in a very big way.

Best worn in black, navy or sumptuous jewel tones (which is lucky, since precious stone shades are another mega-trend of the season), and paired with similarly tactile fabrics like silk, chiffon, leather or lace, if looking luxe is your fashion focus over the festive season, velvet should be your new winter style saviour.
