The Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma) yesterday announced that it has completed the first phase of specifications and measures for use of natural gas in cars.
A number of cars will substitute petrol with natural gas under a project undertaken by Adnoc Distribution.
"This was done in cooperation with Adnoc Distribution which is carrying out the project of introducing natural gas in vehicles along with a specialised consultant company," Walid Al Mansouri, director-general of Esma, said in a statement.
"The authority will transfer the study to a technical specifications committee, then it will go to the technical work group that will list a number of specifications for the parts in cars such as gas cylinders, meters, car parts, in addition to other equipment in order to ensure the car operates on natural gas.
He said the authority has held consultative talks with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) which carried out similar projects.
"Applying these measures will ensure the required quality and security criteria in cars. The natural gas-enabled cars will be safer compared to the cars that run on petrol," Al Mansouri added.
"Natural gas is cleaner and more efficient than other fuels, especially in vehicles. The UAE is the first among GCC countries to carry out projects such as using natural gas as a substitute fuel for petrol products," he said.
