Dubai: Consumers will be able to make fixed and mobile calls from one handset from almost any location, as fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) becomes a reality in the region soon.

The Etisalat Academy, a business unit of Etisalat, is organising the first regional Fixed-Mobile Convergence Conference. The three day event will be held between May 22-24 at the Etisalat Academy in Dubai.

Fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) is one of the latest technologies in the telecommunication industry adopted by global service providers.

In the near future, it will be possible to make fixed and mobile calls from one handset from almost any location.

A converged fixed and mobile service makes it possible to access a variety of communication tools, information and/or entertainment services, with consistent quality of service regardless of the device used, the network over which the applications run or the user's location.

Freedom of mobility

An FMC service, whatever its configuration, combines the freedom of mobility with the security, quality of service, higher bandwidth and lower costs of fixed-line services. It is now possible to do this through the use of various networks, either cellular, fixed or WiFi.

Dr. Doaa Fares, General Manager of the Etisalat Academy, said: "The Etisalat Academy stays abreast of trends in the world of technology. This conference will offer an opportunity for participants to acquire knowledge of Fixed-Mobile Convergence through the discussions and presentations by international professionals. They can also benefit from witnessing the evolving technology during the post-conference workshop."

Telecom

The UAE Supreme Committee for the Supervision of the Telecommunications Sector has announced the formation of a nine-member board of trustees to govern the Middle East's first ICT Development Fund, a pioneering initiative aimed at developing the UAE's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

The objective of this fund is to develop the ICT industry, encourage R&D and innovation in ICT, promote education and knowledge in ICT through sponsorships and financial support, organising and sponsoring ICT forums, symposiums, conferences and seminars, entering into international affiliation with Foreign R&D establishments in addition to any other requirements requested by the Telecom Supreme Committee.
