In a bid to limit the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, Italian supercar maker Lamborghini will stop production until March 25.
All of Lamborghini’s vehicles are manufactured at its headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese near the city of Bologna in Italy's industrial north and the facility will remain shut for the next 10 days at least.
Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini said: “This measure is an act of social responsibility and high sensibility towards our people, in the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves right now in Italy and which is also evolving abroad due to the worldwide spread of Coronavirus. As we have done up until now, we continue to monitor the situation in order to react rapidly and with the right flexibility, in collaboration with our people and in order to restart with energy in the right moment.”
Meanwhile, in contrast to Lamborghini’s decision, arch-rival Ferrari said its factories in Maranello and Modena will remain open for now. However, it will reduce its manufacturing workforce "to a minimum".
Like Ferrari's two plants, Lamborghini's factory is inside Italy's "red zone," the region hit hardest by the virus outbreak. Over 15,000 Italians have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
