Body of late Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah laid to rest

Emiri Diwan announces burial will be limited to the family of the late Emir

Kuwait City: The plane carrying the body of late Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah has landed in Kuwait, KUNA reported.

A Kuwaiti government Airbus A340 bearing his remains landed in the capital, where the authorities blocked roads to allow passage of a convoy to the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque for funeral prayers before the burial.

The Emiri Diwan announced that the burial will be limited to the family of the late Emir, a move likely designed to avoid large crowds due to the global health crisis.  The late Emir passed away at 4am on Tuesday in the United States.

The Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, received the body of his brother, the late Emir Sheikh Sabah. The body was also received by the speaker of the National Assembly, Marzouq Al Ghanim and the Prime Minister, Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Sabah.

The deceased was accompanied back home with his brother, Deputy Head of the National Guard, Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Sheikh Mubarak Al Jaber Al Sabah and Sheikh Nasser Al Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

Sheikh Sabah earned a reputation as a shrewd, unshakeable leader who helped steer his country through the 1990 Iraqi invasion, crashes in global oil markets and upheavals in parliament and on the streets.

World leaders and Kuwaitis alike have hailed the legacy of the late emir, architect of the nation's modern foreign policy and mediator in some of the worst crises to grip the Gulf.

After prayers finished the body was moved by close family members to the Sulaibikhat Cemetery for burial.The late Emir’s body will be buried at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery, the largest and main cemetery in Kuwait.

The late Emir’s body, wrapped in the Kuwaiti flag, has arrived at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery, the largest and main cemetery in Kuwait.

Carried by his close family members who lowered him into his last resting place. Family members and officers from the National Guard pass sand toward the grave of the late Emir, a tradition that signifies everybody has participated in the burial.
