According to preliminary investigations, the confrontation began with an argument between the woman’s 15-year-old brother and a 17-year-old beach worker over a place to sit near the water.

The dispute escalated into a physical altercation while the woman was at the beach with members of her family and her children.

Woman intervened to stop fight

Witnesses told investigators that the woman stepped in to separate the two. They alleged that the worker pulled her hair and pushed her in the chest, causing her to fall face-first, before she was struck on the head with the wooden pole of a beach umbrella.

She was taken to a private hospital for treatment but later died from her injuries. Her body was transferred to the morgue while prosecutors opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Alexandria prosecutors ordered the 17-year-old worker to be held for four days pending investigation, with procedures applicable to minors to be observed.

Prosecutors also ordered further criminal investigations, a medical examination of the suspect at a government hospital and an expedited final forensic report on the woman’s death.

Investigators have questioned witnesses and are reviewing CCTV footage from around the beach to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility.

Alexandria tightens beach controls

Following the death, Alexandria Governorate began procedures to terminate its contract with the beach operator under provisions governing the management and operation of public beaches.

Alexandria Governor Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed ordered tighter controls across the city's beaches, including checks not only on operators but also on their employees.

Beach operators will be required to submit approved lists of workers before they are permitted to work, with employees subject to criminal background and medical checks by the relevant authorities.

Officials have also been instructed to increase unannounced inspections and take legal and contractual action against operators found to be violating regulations.
