Indian Embassy issues travel advisory amid Thailand-Cambodia border clashes

The Embassy of India in Cambodia has issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travelling to border areas amid ongoing clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.

In an official statement, the Embassy said: "In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas."

Indian Embassy in Thailand also issues travel warning

Earlier on Friday, the Indian Embassy in Thailand warned Indian nationals against travelling to seven provinces near the Thailand-Cambodia border following escalating tensions. The advisory encouraged travellers to monitor updates from official Thai sources such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s TAT Newsroom.

Escalating border conflict

The border clashes have sparked a severe humanitarian crisis, forcing over 100,000 people to flee their homes within just two days, according to CNN.

The long-standing territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back more than a century to French colonial-era border demarcations. Cambodia bases its claims on these historical maps, which Thailand disputes as inaccurate.

Both countries have formally approached the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) following two days of cross-border fighting. The UNSC has scheduled an emergency session for Saturday to address the crisis.

Thailand alleges that clashes began after Cambodian forces used drones to surveil Thai troops near the border. Cambodia, in turn, accuses Thai soldiers of initiating hostilities by violating a prior agreement.
