Eric Trump, son of former US President Donald Trump, has launched a fierce attack on New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of “hating Indian people” and branding him a socialist and communist.

In a recent interview, Eric described the 34-year-old Democrat as someone who "hates the Indian population" and labelled him a "socialist communist."

Mehdi Hasan responds

British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan sharply criticised Eric Trump for his sweeping allegations, accusing Mamdani of anti-Indian and antisemitic attitudes.

Hasan, whose parents are originally from Hyderabad, fired back on X, sharing the interview clip and writing: “Zohran Mamdani is Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons.”

He challenged the logic of Eric Trump’s claim that an Indian-origin politician “hates” Indians.

Criticism of Mamdani’s political positions

Eric Trump also targeted Mamdani’s political positions, including his earlier statement that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York, citing the ICC arrest warrant issued in November 2024.

Eric, who also serves as executive vice-president of the Trump Organisation, argued that New York needs “safe streets, clean streets, reasonable taxes” and suggested that cities thrive best with limited government intervention.

Mamdani’s historic win

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, made history earlier this month by winning the New York City mayoral election. He will become the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in more than a century, taking office on January 1.

Mamdani has maintained that he would honour the ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu, stating: “This is a city that believes in international law… and our city should uphold the warrants the International Criminal Court issues.”
