Authorities urge public to hang up and block unknown numbers as voice-cloning scams surge

Dubai: The Dubai Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has issued an urgent warning to the public over a surge in scam calls in which fraudsters impersonate government entities to steal personal and financial information.
The alert comes after several residents reported receiving automated or live calls claiming to be from official authorities. In a recently circulating awareness video, TDRA shared a real snippet of a cloned voice mimicking an official, demonstrating how convincingly scammers aim to lure victims into sharing sensitive data.
Officials stressed that genuine government entities never request confidential details over the phone, nor do they threaten to suspend services, impose fines or take legal action via calls.
Residents are urged to hang up immediately, block the number, and avoid engaging with unknown callers. TDRA reminded the public to stay vigilant, protect their data at all times, and rely only on verified official channels for information.
