Veteran actress Chithra, who has featured in several South Indian-language films including Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu, died in Chennai on August 21 reportedly due to a cardiac arrest at her residence.

She was 56 and is survived by her husband and daughter.

Chithra has featured in several Tamil and Malayalam blockbusters including ‘Cheran Pandiyan’, 'Adwaitham', ‘Pondatti Rajyam’, ‘Chinnavar’ and ‘Gopala Gopala’. Her last film was ‘En Sangathu Aalai Adichavan Evan Da’, which released in January 2020.

She has acted in over 100 films and has shared screen space with actors including Mohanlal and Prem Nazir.

Chithra,  born in Kochi, was introduced as a child artiste in ‘Aval Appadi Thaan’ directed by ‘K Balachander’. She quit films after her marriage to Vijayaraghavan in 1990.
