Dubai: A medical team has succeeded in removing a toothbrush from a woman’s stomach at Al Noor Specialist Hospital in Mecca, local media reported.

The 20-year-old woman told the doctors at the hospital’s emergency department that she swallowed the toothbrush accidently while she was brushing her teeth. The patient said the brush slipped into her throat and she tried to extract it by herself. But by mistake, she pushed it to the oesophagus and then slipped down to her stomach.

Following medical examinations, an x-ray and CT-scan, the woman was taken immediately to the operation theatre. In just a 20-minute gastroscopy, the medical team led by gastroenterologist Dr. Mohammed Fawzi, was able to extract the toothbrush from the woman’s stomach.

Dr. Motlaq Al Malki, Assistant director for medical services at the hospital, said the woman is now in good health condition and is being monitored.
