Kuwait City: On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health and Municipality announced that fish auctions will be halted after evidence of overcrowding in markets.
The Kuwait Fisherman Union revealed that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) informed the union regarding the cancelation of auctions, and that the ministry will dictate the price for vendors and supermarkets.
The decision to stop auctions will mean that a quota will be set for vendors and supermarkets regarding the price of fish.
After videos surfaced on social media illustrating the overcrowding at fish markets, mainly the Souq Sharq market, and that health measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus were not being adhered to.
In order to ensure that all health measures are being enforced, the MOCI is considering to reinstate the decision that stipulates anybody entering the fish market must reserve an appointment prior to their visit, as it was previously done a few months ago.
