The groom, identified by his first name, Bhupendra, was on his was to his wedding in southeast Delhi’s Sarita Vihar area on Monday afternoon, when his car suddenly caught fire, reported NDTV, India-based television news channel.
Two cops from Delhi Police who were on lockdown duty in the area spotted the flames and stopped the car immediately, making sure that the groom and another man travelling with him got out of the vehicle safely.
In minutes, the car blew up in the middle of the empty road.
On getting to know that Bhupendra was on his way to get married, the policemen decided to drop him to the venue in their vehicle.
NDTV reported that the wedding eventually took place as planned.
A video of the incident was posted online.
The clip shows the anxious groom in his traditional wedding attire, a sherwani, and wearing a facemask, holding a basket of fruits and speaking to someone on a phone soon after the accident.
People in India are under a nationwide lockdown due to the spread of coronavirus that will come to an end on May 3. The Indian government has put restrictions on the number of people who can attend weddings and funerals to ensure there is no crowding and that social distancing is maintained.
