Moroccan man wounded in immolation attempt

Rabat:  A Moroccan was wounded Tuesday in an attempted self-immolation in the latest in a string of Tunisia-inspired burnings across the Arab world, the official MAP news agency reported.

The man apparently had doused himself with petrol during a protest in front of the education ministry in Rabat, MAP reported. He was taken to hospital but his life was not in danger.

Police said another person set him on fire and that they are searching for the accomplice.

At least four attempted self-immolation cases have been reported in Morocco over the last dozen days.

They appear to be inspired by the self-immolation of a 26-year old Tunisian to protest against unemployment whose act triggered a public revolt that ousted authoritarian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked a wave of similar burnings across the Arab world.
