Dubai: The serving of haram food is prohibited in restaurants, a senior Dubai Municipality official told reporters at a press conference yesterday.

Responding to complaints that some restaurants use the same kitchen and pots to cook pork, Abdullah Rafeeu, Assistant Director-General for Environment and Public Health Affairs, said this was prohibited.

Regarding reports that some people kill cats in order to cook them he said they had not come across any such complaints. It is not allowed to serve cats, dogs or horse meat in restaurants, he added.

He added as the UAE was a Muslim country it is not allowed to serve haram food (prohibited in Islam) in restaurants.

However, he said every community has the right to eat the food they like at home.

People can complain against any violations on the municipality's emergency number 04-2232323.
