25 killed in Kolkata building crash
At least 25 people are killed when a five-story apartment building collapses in southern Kolkata. As many as 35 people are trapped inside. The decade-old building caved in when the residents were asleep in its 10 apartments. Policemen and firemen rushed to the scene. Using shovels and their bare hands, they rescued seven people from the rubble, three of them critically injured. Later, bulldozers and cranes arrive on the scene, but they were unable to reach the building, which is on a narrow lane in a neighbourhood crowded with many new and old apartment buildings. Ashim Dasgupta, the urban development minister of West Bengal and Mayor Prasanta Chatterji, who also rushed to the apartment building, said the cause of the collapse would be investigated by a committee the government was appointing. Besides the corporation officials, about 100 fire brigade personnel, a huge contingent of city police and rapid action force and the engineers of Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation are engaged in carrying out rescue operation.
