A supermoon occurs in about 25% of lunar cycles, while a total lunar eclipse occurs in about 5%. According to NASA, "The term Supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 as either a new or full Moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth. Since we don't see new moons, full supermoons, which are the most significant and brightest full moons of the year, have caught the public's attention.
