Dubai Municipality is working hard to expand the capacity of the city's sewage plants. Although three years may seem a long time to wait, that is how long it will take to complete the construction of the new sewage plant in Jebel Ali and to link it up to the city with underground pipes. This will finally end the illegal dumping of sewage in the desert and into storm drains by frustrated sewage truck drivers, who are sometimes forced to wait for more than 24 hours to deliver their loads.

However, furious residents in areas suffering from sewage dumping and angry beachgoers affronted by a polluted sea will not have to wait three years for improvements to become apparent. The new sewage plant in Jebel Ali is due to begin operations next month. By September it will be able to handle 150,000 cubic metres of waste, its capacity increasing to 250,000 cubic metres by next spring.
