Traffic congestion is a critical problem in Sharjah’s Muweilah area. There are several families residing in this area and there are many schools nearby, too. Every morning, I notice motorists stuck in traffic, that is being created by parked vehicles.

Residents of the area are forced to park their cars in unused sandy lots next to buildings. There are no designated parking spots or any system, and so people park in whatever manner they find convenient and block all available space.

A few days ago, I was in the balcony of my apartment and saw this school bus struggling to exit the parking area (as seen in photograph). It was stuck for at least half an hour. I’m a witness to this sorry scene every other day.

After this sandy lot, there is an important exit to the Kalba — Maliha Road leading towards the National Paints roundabout. A short stretch of the road, not more than 100 metres, and the lane with all the schools in is a dirt road with potholes and soft sand. As people try to make their way to the exit, they end up stranded in the mess.

This problem has gone unnoticed for a long time, putting all the residents in stress at the start of the day. The authorities need to address this grave issue. The problem can be solved to a great extent if the short stretch of dirt road is well laid and authorities launch a crackdown on the vehicles that are parked in a way that they block the free flow of traffic.
